Jack's reply made Tatum laugh aloud. A joke of his own? Now that was an unexpected.
She seemed to relax more in the booth, one hand coming to toy gently with her glass. She was grateful that Jack seemed to have a fine sense of humor. It seemed so many at the hospital were so driven, so focused, most seemed liked they hadn't smiled in decades let alone cracked a joke. It was refreshing to be around someone who was the opposite of all that.
Jack's response brought a broader smile to Tatum's smile, and after waving away the dessert tray, she pushed her glass aside, suddenly not wanting the alcohol.
Leaning forward as she had previously to share her teasing whisper a few moments earlier, though now she was deadly serious as she spoke, "When ye were workin with the Muggles, did ye ni ever get tempted te use magic on them? So many o'the diseases they get we have cures fer . . ."
Trailing off, she remained where she was, looking intently upon Jack as she awaited his reply.

That was a question that had been proposed to him before when he was applying to St. Mungo’s for the position he currently had. He sipped his water and cleared his throat.
“It would have made things easier,” he replied being honest. “I can’t tell you the number of times someone was admitted into the hospital and suffered.” He glanced down at his glass for a moment. “But magic…” He trailed off unsure of how to explain what he was trying to say.
“In short, yes I was tempted on many occasion to intervene and fix it all.” He leaned back as the server came with the pie and grabbed his fork. He thanked him politely and looked back to her.
”But in the end a muggle hospital wasn’t a place for magic.”

Tatum listened to Jack, smiling thinly as she listened to his words. Remaining in her posture of leaning closer, she placed both elbows upon the table, leaning her chest upon her hands so she could be more comfortable as she listened.
Nothing he said was a surprise to her. She had already gathered that he had a passion for what he did and that only came with a true compassion for others. Of course, he had thought about bending the rules, been tempted by it. But he had not. And she knew the reasons why, the good sense mutterings that people repeated ad nauseum again and again.
"Why not?" she asked, her smile growing more enigmatic.
She tilted her head, arching both brows again as she awaited his explanation.

It was as good an explanation as any. It of course was the right one. The one that a future employer wanted to hear from a prospective employee. Medicine was a hard area to succeed in. You either sunk or swam. There were rules and regulations. Malpractice. Oaths. And all through it were the rulings of the Ministry of Magic.
"Why not?" she asked, her smile growing more enigmatic.
”The logical part of me says that I couldn’t in fear of loosing y license to practice,” he admitted openly. And that was a big issue. No license meant he couldn’t work and he’d be cut off from doing what he loved.
“But there’s the bigger part of me that asks who gave me the right to play God.”

Tatum tucked a curl behind her ear.
"Logic, aye. A sound an good thing in a healer. Ye must make the administrator right proud."
She gave him a teasing wink before she sat up slightly.
"An if ye really believe there's a god fer ye te play, would ye ni say that the power ye have is a gift from him, somethin ye have a responsibility te use te make the world a better place."
Shrugging her shoulders slightly, she added, "An are ye ni playin god when ye use magic in Mungo's? I dinna think ye the sort te feel that Muggles derserve somethin less than wizardin folk."
